How do you handle a slump?

How do you handle a slump?

If a downturn hits your industry as a whole, it won’t be a surprise to you if you have kept up on your reading.

The biggest mistake you can make is to blame a sales slump entirely on a down market or on negative press or anything else.

The single best first step is to find a mirror. Look yourself in the eye and say, “I’m having poor sales because I am not serving enough clients or I am not serving the clients I have well enough.”
For some salespeople, the hardest thing in the world to do is to admit that it all comes down to that face in the mirror. It’s called accountability and can be an extremely humbling experience (especially if you’re not already a humble, interested introvert).
If a downturn hits your industry as a whole, it won’t be a surprise to you if you have kept up on your reading. Again, you should be able to see the warning signs and take action that will be in the best interests of both your clients and your own career.
The biggest mistake you can make is to blame a sales slump entirely on a down market or on negative press or anything else.
Why?
Because when you blame someone or something outside yourself, you give yourself an excuse and let yourself off the hook for something only you can fix. It puts you in a negative place. You allow yourself to wallow in self pity or become absorbed in what’s wrong instead of working toward something positive, good and right—a solution!
It can be an equally great mistake to blame yourself for your entire sales slump unless you’re the only person in your company having one.
  • Markets will fluctuate.
  • Competitors will develop better products or newer technologies faster than yours.
  • Consumers will not always be loyal to your brand.
If the market as a whole is down, it’s time to get creative with your selling tactics.
If the market is okay, but your sales performance is down, it’s time to go back to the fundamentals of selling and bring your skills up to a new level of service.
Consider using a tracking device for your activity. An app would be ideal, but I offer a simple paper form that you can download here (click on the graph):

It’s exactly the one I used to track my activity. The most interesting thing was that when my business activities weren’t on par, my business slumped. When I kept track of, and kept doing what I knew I should, I avoided slumps.

About the Author:

Tom Hopkins photoTom Hopkins wasn’t born to wealth and privilege. He was a mediocre student and began his work life in construction carrying steel. After looking around at the people who were dressed well and driving new cars, he decided on the field of real estate.

Tom’s first six months in real estate were anything but successful. He had sold only one home and averaged $42 a month in income. He was down to his last $150 in savings when a man came into the real estate office promoting a three-day sales training seminar with J. Douglas Edwards. Tom hadn’t yet heard of either “sales training” or Mr. Edwards. He decided to invest his last bit of savings in the program.

Tom applied everything he learned and by the time he turned 27, he was a millionaire salesperson in real estate. He set records that remained unbroken until this century. His last year as a real estate agent, he sold 365 homes—the equivalent of one each day. Grand total, he closed 1,553 real estate transactions in a period of six years.

Tom taught pre-licensing courses in the field of real estate first. He also taught courses on how to get started in the business. Eventually, this evolved into his current sales training career where he is recognized as America’s #1 Sales Trainer and The Builder of Sales Champions.
