Don’t flow into the ‘ordinary’ stream. Be different
Branding is all about celebrating the uniqueness in you. It was an idea that was developed long ago to differentiate. The most obvious example is the different patterns and colours painted on the bodies of different tribes. That was a symbol of a unique Identity. That was a symbol of a Brand – by being different.
However many of us hate being different. To a certain extend we are being pushed into the common river that carries the common people – we would carry the same mentality, the same behaviours and going the same direction. And when someone is doing something ‘special’, we would generalise it as ‘weird’, as this behaviour is so much different to the rest of the clan.
Just like when you hang around with a group of working executives. You come out with a brilliant idea to start a business. You will then be greeted by waves of disapprovals, “Are you crazy?”, “I think it’s too risky”, “Let’s be safe under these economic circumstances”.
What went wrong? When you ask the wrong people the right questions, they will give you the wrong answers. They are the ones who are safely in their comfort zone and they want you to be part of the ‘clan’. What you need to do? Simply stay true to your path and make it count.
Personal Branding is about being you. No one is perfect, but you can be Perfectly You. The Rule #1 is to be 100% honest with yourself – of WHO you are, WHAT you want in life, and design a path on HOW you can get it.
